Ever wondered how a dental crown is made? Take a look at this ![]()
1. Examination and preparation: The dentist will first examine the tooth to determine if a crown is necessary. If it is, the tooth will be prepared by removing any decay or damage and then reshaped to accommodate the crown.
2. Impression: An impression of the prepared tooth is taken using a putty-like material. This impression is then sent to a dental laboratory for the crown to be fabricated. With our new iTero scanner, this step is not always necessary!
3. Temporary crown: While waiting for the permanent crown to be made, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it. These can either be done using a special temporary material or metal depending on the dentists preference
4. Crown fabrication: The dental laboratory will create the permanent crown based on the impression or scan provided. The crown is typically made from materials such as porcelain, metal, or a combination of both.
5. Crown placement: Once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is placed over the prepared tooth. The dentist will ensure that the crown fits properly and matches the surrounding teeth before cementing it into place.
Overall, the process of making a crown involves careful preparation, fabrication, and placement to ensure a comfortable and natural-looking restoration for the tooth.
