Cleaning an orthodontic brace is important to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent plaque buildup and decay. Here are some steps to clean a dental brace:
1. Brushing: Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth and braces after every meal and snack. Brush at a 45-degree angle, using small circular motions to clean around the brackets and wires. Be gentle to avoid damaging the braces.
2. Interdental brushes: Interdental brushes, also widely known as Tepes, can be used to clean between the brackets and wires. Insert the brush between the teeth and braces, and gently move it back and forth to remove any food particles or plaque. Don’t force a brush that is too big, as this may damage the gums. If you don’t know what size to use, we can choose for you at your next dental appointment
3. Flossing: Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to clean between the teeth and under the wires. Thread the floss under the wire and carefully floss between each tooth. Repeat this process for each tooth.
4. Water flosser: A water flosser, such as a Waterpik, can be used to remove plaque and food debris from hard-to-reach areas. Aim the water flosser at the gumline and between the teeth and braces to thoroughly clean the area.
5. Mouthwash: This step isn’t necessary, however if you like using mouthwash then use an antimicrobial mouthwash to kill bacteria and freshen your breath. Swish the mouthwash around your mouth for 30 seconds and then spit it out. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, as they can cause dry mouth.
6. Regular dental check-ups: Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings. Your dentist will be able to remove any stubborn plaque or tartar that may have accumulated around the braces.
Remember to be consistent with your oral hygiene routine and clean your dental brace thoroughly to maintain healthy teeth and gums. If you have any concerns or questions about cleaning your dental brace, consult your orthodontist or dentist for guidance.
